Phosphorylated BMAL1:CLOCK bound to the promoter of PER3 activates transcription (Matsumura and Akashi 2017). Expression of PER3 oscillates in a circadian rhythm in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, but, unlike PER1 and PER2, expression is not induced by light during the night (Li et al. 2013, and inferred from mouse homologs). Expression of PER3 peaks around mid-day, after the peak of PER1 expression and before the peak of PER2 expression (Li et al. 2013).
