Phosphorylated Bmal1:Clock and coactivators positively regulate expression of Period-3 (Per3)
Phosphorylated Bmal1:Clock bound to the promoter of Per3 activates transcription (Travnickova-Bendova et al. 2002). Expression of Per3 oscillates in a circadian rhythm in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (Takumi et al. 1998), but, unlike Per1 and Per2, expression is not induced by light during the night (Zylka et al. 1998). Disruption of Per3 produced less severe effects on behavioral rhythms than did disruptions of Per1 and Per2 (Bae et al. 2001).
