The gene for GSTA3 encodes glutathione-S-transferase A3, which catalyzes the addition of reduced glutathione onto a range of hydrophobic electrophiles, detoxifying them (reviewed in Baird and Yamamoto, 2020). GSTA3 expression is regulated by the KEAP1:NFE2L2 signaling pathway in response to oxidative and electrophilic stress (Itoh et al, 1997; McMahon et al, 2001). NFE2L2 binds to the antioxidant response element in the GSTA3 promoter to stimulate expression as assessed by ChIP, mRNA and protein levels (Itoh et al, 1997; McMahon et al, 2001; Malhotra et al, 2010).
