In the nucleus, activated AMPK phosphorylates serine residue 568 of ChREBP (Carbohydrate Response Element Binding Protein). Phosphorylated ChREBP does not bind to ChRE chromosomal DNA sequence elements and thus loses its ability to promote transcription of genes involved in glycolysis and lipogenesis.
