The orotate phosphoribosyltransferase activity of dimeric UMPS (uridine monophosphate synthetase) catalyzes the reaction of orotate and 5-phospho-alpha-D-ribose 1-diphosphate (PRPP) to form orotidine 5'-monophosphate (OMP) and pyrophosphate. The chicken enzyme is known only as the product of a large-scale sequencing project to identify chicken mRNAs; all molecular details of the reaction are inferred from its human counterpart.
