In a study of tetracycline resistant E. coli the most common resistance gene in human infections was tetB. The encoded protein is a transmembrane transporter of the major facilitator type (Schwaiger et al., 2010). Homologous proteins export tetracyclines via a proton antiport mechanism (Sapunaric & Levy, 2005).
