ATP activates the P2RX7 (P2X7, P2Z) trimer to passively transport cations, notably calcium (Wiley et al. 1993, Humphreys et al. 1998, Wiley et al. 1998, Riedel et al. 2007, and inferred from the rat homologue, reviewed in Volonté et al. 2012, Di Virgilio et al. 2018). Calcium and sodium ions follow their concentration gradients from the extracellular region to the cytosol. In mouse osteocytes, P2rx7 is located at the plasma membrane in a complex with the Pannexin1 (Panx1) anion channel (Seref-Ferlengez et al. 2016).
