Gremlin 1 (GREM1), a secreted BMP antagonist, is expressed in the metanephric mesenchyme (inferred from the mouse homolog). Expression of GREM1 in the metanephric mesenchyme is dependent on SIX1 (inferred from mouse homologs). In mice, absence of Grem1 causes disrupted ureter growth and branching (Michos et al. 2004) due to excessive Bmp4 signaling via phospho-Smad proteins (Michos et al. 2007).
