As inferred from mouse homologs, REV-ERBA (NR1D1) binds the promoter of the ELOVL3 gene and represses transcription, possibly by recruiting corepressors. ELOVL3 encodes very long chain fatty acid elongase-3 which catalyzes the rate-limiting step of the elongation of very long (C20-C24) fatty acid chains (inferred from the mouse homolog in Tvrdik et al. 2000). In male mice but not female mice, expression of Elvol3 is circadian and peaks diurnally (Brolinson et al. 2008).
