Once in the Golgi, ATF6-alpha undergoes two sequential proteolytic cleavages. S1P catalyzes the first of these, probably cleaving the ATF6-alpha polypeptide between residues 418 and 419 based on homology with known S1P cleavage sites in other proteins.
