text The SCF ubiquitin E3 ligase complex Fbxl21:Cul1:Skp1:Rbx1 polyubiquitinylates Cry1 (Yoo et al. 2013, Hirano et al. 2013) on lysine-107 and, by inference, Cry2 on lysine-125. The E2 complexes Ub:Ube2d1, Ub:Ube2d3, but not Ub:Ube2n can serve as donors of ubiquitin in vitro (Yoo et al. 2013, Hirano et al. 2013). In the cytosol, Fbxl21 promotes degradation of Cry proteins, therefore the linkage between ubiquitin subunits may occur at lysine-48 (K48) of ubiquitin (Yoo et al. 2013, Hirano et al. 2013). In the nucleus, Fbxl21 inhibits Fbxl3-dependent degradation of CRY proteins through an uncharacterized mechanism (Yoo et al. 2013) that may involve a non-K48 linkage between ubiquitin subunits (Hirano et al. 2013).
