| text | Phosphorylated Bmal1:Clock heterodimers bind five E-boxes (Hida et al. 2000) in the promoter of the Per1 gene and recruits coactivators Crebbp (Cbp) (Etchegaray et al. 2003) and Kmt2a (Mll1) to activate transcription (Travnickova-Bendova et al. 2002, Oishi et al. 2003, Kondratov et al. 2006, Dardente et al. 2007, Tamaru et al. 2009, Yamajuku et al. 2010). Per1 shows circadian expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the retina, with maximum expression occurring earlier in the day than Per2 or Per3 (Shearman et al. 1997, Albrecht et al. 1997, Sun et al. 1997, Tei et al. 1997, Takumi et al. 1998, Liu et al. 2007). Npas2 can heterodimerize with Bmal1 in place of Clock and the heterodimer activates expression of Per1 (Reick et al. 2001, Yoshii et al. 2015). |
