text Serine protease autotransporters of Enterobacteriaceae (SPATEs) like Hbp transport their protease domain through their pore domain and cleave it in cis, releasing it to extracellular space (Otto et al., 1998; Drago-Serrano et al., 2006; reviewed in Ruiz-Peres & Nataro, 2020; Clarke et al., 2022). SPATE expression is prevalent in extraintestinal E.coli (ExPEC) strains where the released proteases are responsible for tissue damage and cleavage of molecules of the complement system, which is a key feature for the establishment of infection in the bloodstream (Freire et al., 2020).
