| text | In the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), pyruvate (PYR) is converted to acetate non-enzymatically. H2O2 is the end product of reactive oxygen species (ROS) degradation, usually from the reduction of superoxide (O2-). Under typical cell culture conditions, when there is active PDH and aKGDH, ROS contribute to around 5-15% of the acetate production. Thus, pyruvate may naturally function as a ROS scavenger (Liu et al., 2018). |
