text NODAL signaling causes the phosphorylation of SMAD2 and SMAD3 which transit with SMAD4 into the nucleus and, in concert with EOMES (Teo et al. 2011), bind an upstream enhancer of the GOOSECOID (GSC) gene (inferred from human pluripotent stem cells in Brown et al. 2011, Teo et al. 2011, Daneshvar et al. 2016). SMAD2,3 also activates transcription of DIGIT, a long noncoding RNA located between the enhancer and the GSC coding region that enhances transcription of GSC (Daneshvar et al. 2016). MIXL1 binds elements in the promoter of the GSC gene (inferred from mouse homologs).
