| text | The ZSCAN4 gene, the single human homolog of the Zscan4 gene family in mouse, is transcribed to yield mRNA (Petropoulos et al. 2016) which is translated to yield protein. ZSCAN4 is expressed initially in 2-cell embryos (Yan et al. 2013), increases in 4-cell embryos (Yan et al. 2013), and continues in blastocysts (Petropoulos et al. 2016). DUX4 (Hendrickson et al. 2017) and TPRXL, TPRX1, and TPRX2 (Zou et al. 2022) directly activate ZSCAN4 during minor (initial) zygotic genome activation. ZSCAN4 binds nucleosomes of microsatellites and protects against DNA damage (inferred from the mouse homolog in Srinivasan et al. 2020). |
