text In cancer cells it has been shown that Snail (SNAI1) protein binds the promoter of the E-Cadherin (CDH1) gene and represses expression of CDH1 (Batlle et al. 2000, Maturi et al. 2018, and inferred from mouse homologs). Repression of CDH1 by SNAI1 results in a reduction in CDH1 protein at the plasma membrane that causes loss of contact between epithelial cells during the epithelial to mesenchyme transition that is required for mesoderm formation (inferred from mouse embryos). SNAI1 efficient repression and binding to human and mouse CDH1 promoter require intact zinc finger motifs ZF1 and ZF2 (Villarejo et al. 2014). SMAD3:SMAD4 heterotrimer may be involved in the recruitment of SNAI1 to the CDH1 gene promoter (Vincent et al. 2009).
