text Prednisolone (PREDL) is dehydrogenated to prednisone (PREDN) by HSD11B2 (Diederich et al, 2002). The conversion of 11?-hydroxysteroids to 11-oxosteroids and vice versa is catalyzed by the enzymes 11?-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 and 2 (HSD11B1, HSD11B2). Although the activity of both enzymes is bidirectional in vitro, in vivo HSD11B1 acts as 11-oxosteroid reductase and HSD11B2 acts as 11?-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (Jamieson et al, 1995). HSD11B1 is ubiquitously expressed, with maximum activity in the liver, while HSD11B2 is mainly active in placenta, colon, and kidney cells (Ricketts et al, 1998).
