text The small envelope protein (E) of the coronavirus SARS?CoV?2 localizes to the ER and the ERGIC in HEK 293S cells (Cabrera-Garcia et al, 2021). At 18 to 24 h after initial delivery in HeLa and SW1573 human alveolar cells, amphipol E constructs were seen to partially overlap with the trans-Golgi marker Golgin 97 in the area surrounding the Golgi but not within the cis-Golgi, ultimately residing in the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and associated vesicles. The localization of delivered E to swollen TGN vesicles is likely disease relevant given that progeny virions are known to accumulate in the TGN before cellular egress (Hutchison et al, 2021).
