| text | Several 16S rRNA (guanine(1405)-N(7))-methyltransferase (16S RMTase) genes have been found in Klebsiella pneumoniae, often colocated with NDM-type carbapenemase genes. The enzymes methylate the 16S rRNA part of the prokaryotic small (30S) ribosomal subunit at the 1405-guanosine position, using up one S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) molecule, thereby preventing the binding of 4,6-disubstituted aminoglycosides like gentamicin. At least eight different 16S RMTase genes have been isolated from K.pneumoniae infecting patients worldwide (Bueno et al., 2013; Galimand et al., 2005; Galimand et al. 2012; Hu et al., 2014; Poirel et al., 2011; Tada et al., 2013; Wachino et al., 2012; reviewed in Doi et al., 2016). |
