Cytochrome c induces apoptosome formation, AIF and endonuclease G function in caspase independent apoptotic nuclear DNA damage. Smac/DIABLO and HtrA2/OMI promote both caspase activation and caspase-independent cytotoxicity (Saelens et al., 2004).
