L-Glutamate binds Grm1 (mGluR1)
In taste bud cells, L-glutamate binds a truncated isoform of Grm1 (mGluR1) that has about 100x lower affinity for L-glutamate than the full-length, brain-expressed isoform does (San Gabriel et al. 2005, San Gabriel et al. 2009). Binding of L-glutamate to Grm1 activates an incompletely characterized signaling cascade that results in depolarization of the taste bud cell.
