DENV genomic RNA (from DENV-2 and DENV-3 strains) and subgenomic RNA can be transferred by extracellular vesicles (EVs) from cell to cell, including transfer from mosquito cells to human cells and from hamster kidney cells (BHK) to human cells (Vora et al., 2018; Ishikawa et al., 2024; reviewed in Athira et al., 2024). EVs from human Huh7 cells infected with DENV strains (such as DENV-2 PL046; all four DENV serotypes can produce relevant vesicles) also contain viral proteins E, NS1, prM/M, as well as host lipid droplets and Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 beta (MAP1LC3B, LC3-II), an autophagy marker (Wu et al., 2016).
