TBX21 directly upregulates the expression of the C-C motif chemokine 3 (CCL3) gene in T helper 1 cells (Th1 cells) (Jenner et al. 2009, inferred from mouse homologs in supplement-02 of Zhu et al. 2012). CCL3 (MIP-1alpha) is a pro-inflammatory chemokine that binds and signals through the CCR1 and CCR5 receptors (reviewed in Menten et al. 2002).
