Phosphorylated BMAL1:CLOCK binds an E-box located in the promoter and two E-boxes located in introns of the DBP gene (inferred from mouse homologs). BMAL1:CLOCK at the DBP promoter is highly unstable and inhibition of its proteolysis causes inhibition of its transcription activation activity, suggesting that BMAL1:CLOCK may be a "kamikaze" transcription factor (inferred from mouse homologs). Phosphorylated BMAL1:CLOCK recruits the histone methyltransferase KMT2A (MLL1) and the histone acetyltransferase CREBBP through an interaction between KMT2A and CLOCK (inferred from mouse homologs in Katada and Sassone-Corsi 2010) and an interaction between BMAL1 and CREBBP (inferred from mouse homologs Garg et al. 2019).
