MITF-M negatively regulates PXN expression in melanoma cells (Dilshat et al, 2021; Webster et al, 2014; Laurette et al, 2015). PXN encodes paxillin, a key scaffolding protein in the formation of focal adhesions (reviewed in Turner, 2000). Through the regulation of genes involved in focal adhesions and extracellular matrix organization, MITF-M acts as a rheostat on cellular behaviours such as quiescence, invasiveness, proliferation and differentiation (Carreira et al, 2006; reviewed in Rambow et al, 2019; Goding and Arnheiter, 2019).
