MITF-M binds to a cognate element in the ZEB1 locus to repress its expression as assessed by CUT-and-RUN DNA binding analysis and ChIP-seq (Webster et al, 2014; Laurette et al, 2015; Dilshat et al, 2021). Consistent with this, expression levels of MITF and ZEB1 are inversely correlated in analysis of TCGA data, and ZEB1 expression is upregulated in tumors expressing low levels of MITF and in CRISPR-mediated knockout melanoma cell lines (Dilshat et al, 2021).
