Based on the analogy with the canonical 20S core particle (20S CP), it is assumed that, upon dimerization of two half-spermatoproteasomes to form the preholospermatoproteasome, the active site–bearing beta-subunits, PSMB5 (beta-5), PSMB6 (beta-1), and PSMB7 (beta-2), undergo autocatalytic cleavage of their propeptides, generating the mature catalytic sites and completing the spermatoproteasome 20S core particle (20S sCP) assembly (reviewed in Tomko and Hochstrasser 2013).
