Unphosphorylated malic enzyme 1 (ME1) forms a dimer of dimers (Bukato et al., 1995). PGAM5-mediated dephosphorylation of ME1 at S336 leads to ME1 dimerization and activation, which is reversed by NEK1 kinase-mediated S336 phosphorylation (Zhu et al., 2020).
