SOX1 is expressed at a low level in anterior and posterior neural plate, with expression in posterior neural plate slightly higher (inferred from mouse embryos). Expression then greatly increases in the posterior neural tube and anterior neural plate (inferred from mouse embryos). In embryonic stem cells, ZNF521 binds the SOX1 gene (inferred from mouse homologs) and enhances its expression (Shahbazi et al. 2016, and inferred from mouse homologs). In human embryonic stem cells, ZEB2 (SIP1) enhances expression of SOX1 and neural differentiation (Chng et al. 2010). POU3F1 also enhances expression of SOX1, though binding of POU3F1 to the SOX1 gene has not been demonstrated (inferred from mouse embryonic stem cells in Zhu et al. 2014).
