Nephronectin (NPNT) secreted by the nephric duct binds integrin alpha8/beta1 (ITGA8) on the plasma membrane of adjacent metanephric mesenchyme cells (inferred from mouse homologs). The Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) domain of NPNT is required for binding (inferred from mouse homologs). The interaction enhances expression of GDNF, which interacts with the RET receptor tyrosine kinase on the plasma membrane of nephric duct cells to regulate formation of the ureteric bud (inferred from mouse homologs).
