EPHA4 is expressed in the rostral halves of somites (inferred from mouse embryos) where it appears to play a role in the determination of somite boundaries through interaction with an Ephrin on an adjacent cell (inferred from zebrafish embryos in Durbin et al. 1998, Barrios et al. 2003 and from chicken embryos in Glazier et al. 2008). Expression of EPHA4 is directly activated by MESP2, which shows the same expression pattern (inferred from mouse homologs).
