In the male pronucleus of the zygote, Serine-arginine-rich protein-specific kinase 1 (SRPK1) phosphorylates protamine 1 (PRM1) on serine-9. This reaction is inferred from mouse homologs in which Srpk1 phosphorylates Prm1 on both serine-9 and serine-43. Human PRM1, however, does not have a serine residue that corresponds to serine-43 of mouse Prm1.
