Dronabinol is a synthetic form of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive component of cannabis (marijuana). It elicits its effects through weak partial agonist activity at cannabinoid-1 (CNR1, CB1) and cannabinoid-2 (CNR2, CB2) receptors and is used in the treatment of anorexia associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS, and nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy in patients who fail to respond adequately to conventional antiemetic treatments (Davis et al. 2007). Nabilone is an analogue of dronabinol and elicits its effects through weak partial agonist activity at CNR1 and CNR2 receptors. Nabilone is indicated for the treatment of the nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy in patients who fail to respond adequately to conventional antiemetic treatments (Davis et al. 2007).
