SLC27A2, also known as VLCS (very long chain acyl-CoA synthetase), associated with the inner surface of the peroxisomal membrane, cayalyzes the reaction of phytanate, CoA-SH, and ATP to form phytanoyl-CoA, AMP, and pyrophosphate (Steinberg et al. 1999).
