Cytosolic adenosine phosphotransferase catalyzes the reaction of abacavir and AMP to form abacavir monophosphate and adenosine (Faletto et al. 1997). This enzymatic activity has been purified from human placenta and is distinct from known human kinases (Garvey and Krenitsky 1992) but has not been associated with a known human gene.
