text TERT, encoding telomerase, is among the identified MITF-targets involved in processes of DNA replication, repair and damage response (Strub et al, 2011; reviewed in Goding and Arnheiter, 2019). MITF binds to E-box elements in the TERT promoter to upregulate its expression as assessed by ChIP in melanoma cells (Strub et al, 2011). Consistent with this, the TERT locus exhibits H3K4 methylation and RNA polymerase II occupancy, and MITF knockdown results in a decrease in TERT expression as assessed by RT-qPCR and RNA sequencing (Strub et al, 2011).
