text COX7A1 gene encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7A1, a component of the cytochrome c oxidase complex that is part of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and localizes to the mitochondrial inner membrane. Based on mouse studies, COX7A1 gene expression is positively regulated by the transcription factor EBF2 during differentiation of brown and beige adipocytes (Rajakumari et al. 2013; Wang et al. 2014; Stine et al. 2016). Loss of EBF2 leads to a significant reduction in the level of active chromatin mark H3K27ac and RNA Pol II localization at the COX7A1 gene (mouse study Shapira et al. 2017). The level of Blnc1 lncRNA which acts as a cofactor for EBF2 positively correlates with COX7A1 mRNA level (mouse study Zhao et al. 2014). As direct binding of EBF2 to the regulatory sequences of COX7A1 gene has not been reported, COX7A1 is annotated as a candidate EBF2 target gene.
