text	Hnf4a is expressed in proximal tubules of developing nephrons (Yu et al. 2012) and is required for formation of proximal tubules (Marable et al. 2018, 2020). In the distal region of comma-shaped bodies and the proximal region of S-shaped bodies, Hnf1b binds the promoter of the Hnf4a gene and activates expression of Hnf4a (Heliot et al. 2013). Hnf4a in turn activates expression of a large number of genes encoding metabolic enzymes and transporters (Martovetsky et al. 2013, Marable et al. 2020) and E-cadherin (Cdh1), which is involved in epithelialization (Kanazawa et al. 2011, Gao et al. 2019).
