| text | SARS-CoV-1 viroporin 3a is a membrane protein that translocates to the plasma membrane and, via shedding, to other cells. It forms a homotetrameric inward-rectifying potassium ion channel by itself, causing cell death (Chan CM et al. 2009; Freundt EC et al. 2010; Yue Y et al. 2018). Additionally, monomeric 3a directly binds to and activates caspase-1 to cleave interleukin 1 beta thus contributing to the necrotic cell death (Yue Y et al, 2018). |
