| text | Phosphorus is an essential element that is critical for structural and metabolic roles in all living organisms. Cells obtain phosphorus in the form of negatively-charged inorganic phosphate (Pi). Two SLC families transport phosphate in mammals; SLC34 (Murer H et al, 2004) and SLC20 (Collins JF et al, 2004). Both are secondary-active, Na+-coupled transporter systems which use the inward Na+ gradient (from the Na+-K+-ATPase) to drive phosphate influx into cells (Virkki LV et al, 2007). |
