Trpm5 transports Na+ from the extracellular region to the cytosol
Trpm5 is activated by calcium ions and passively transports monovalent cations across the plasma membrane, resulting in depolarization of the cell (Hofmann et al. 2003, Liu and Liman 2003, Talavera et al. 2005, Ullrich et al. 2005, Zhang et al. 2007, Uchida et al. 2021). In mice, Trpm4 and Trpm5 are involved in sodium signals in type II taste cells and are required for perception of sweet, bitter, and umami tastes (Dutta Banik et al. 2018, Yoshida et al. 2018). Trpm5 is approximately 28-fold more sensitive to calcium than Trpm4 is (Ullrich et al. 2005).
