DENV serotype 1 (KX618706) NS3 protein contains a mitochondrial transport signal (MTS) and we inferred the same localization of DENV-2 from these results (Gandikota et al., 2020; Gandhi et al., 2023). DENV-1 NS3 import to the mitochondrial matrix has been demonstrated in human HEK293 cells (Gandhi et al., 2023; Gandikota et al., 2020) and using isolated rat liver mitochondria (Gandikota et al., 2020).
