In response to turbulent flow across endothelial cells, YAP1 is phosphorylated on tyrosine-407 (Li et al. 2019) and transits to the nucleus (Wang et al. 2016, Li et al. 2019, Nakajima et al. 2017). The phosphorylation and nuclear localization require interaction between integrin alpha5 (ITGA5) on endothelial cells and extracellular fibronectin, a stiff extracellular matrix (Dupont et al. 2011, Li et al. 2019). Within the nucleus, YAP1 interacts with TEAD proteins at promoters to activate transcription.
