TRIM28 (KAP1) binds the chromoshadow domain of CBX5 (HP1alpha) (Ryan et al. 1999, Ayyanathan et al. 2003, Lechner et al. 2005, Sripathy et al. 2006). One TRIM28 dimer binds one CBX5 dimer (Fonti et al. 2019). Dimerization of CBX5 increases chromatin stiffness, but CBX5 does not appear to affect transcription, local chromatin compaction, or histone methylation (Strom et al. 2021).
