PAX2 is initially expressed in the intermediate mesoderm prior to renal specification and then continues expression in renal progenitors (inferred from mouse embryos in Bouchard et al. 2002, Boualia et al. 2011, Marcotte et al. 2014). In mouse embryos after initiation of the nephric duct, Pax2 activates expression of Lhx1, which activates expression of Emx2 (Marcotte et al. 2014). Emx2, in turn maintains expression of Pax2 in the developing nephric duct (Miyamoto et al. 1997). In mice, absence of Pax2 causes a failure to form mesonephric tubules (Torres et al. 1995)
