The CDH11 variant transcript consists of 14 exons. Compared to the canonical transcript, an extra exon of 179 nucleotides is spliced in between the canonical transcript's exons 12 and 13. This additional exon introduces a frameshift into the coding sequence of the CDH11 transmembrane domain, resulting in a shorter protein. Compared to the canonical CDH11 isoform, the variant CDH11 isoform lacks one third of the transmembrane domain and the entire cytoplasmic domain (Okazaki et al. 1994, Kawaguchi et al. 1999). Since the 3' UTR of the variant transcript remains identical to the 3' UTR of the canonical transcript, it can be assumed that CDH11-targeting miRNAs act against both splicing isoforms.
