NKX2-5 binds sites (called NKE sites) in the promoter upstream of the first exon of GATA4 in embryonic hearts (Riazi et al. 2009). NKX2-5 enhances transcription of GATA4 (Riazi et al. 2009), which then directly enhances transcription of NKX2-5.
