SARS-CoV-2 viroporin 3a (ORF3a) is a membrane protein that translocates to the plasma membrane and probably, via shedding like SARS-CoV-1 3a, to other cells. It forms a homotetrameric inward-rectifying potassium ion channel which is inhibited by barium ions. Blocking potassium efflux from the cell impaired protein 3a's ability to trigger assembly of both ASC-independent and -dependent NLRP3 inflammasomes, upon infection of A549 and HEK-293T cells with SARS-CoV-2 (Xu et al, 2020).
