Based on studies in mouse, NPAS4 stimulates transcription of the RBFOX3 (NeuN) gene (Yun et al. 2013). ARNTL (BMAL1), a heterodimerization partner of NPAS4, positively regulates NeuN expression (Malik et al. 2015). The effect of the other two NPAS4 heterodimerization partners from the aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear transclocator (ARNT) family, ARNT and ARNT2, on NeuN gene expression is not known.
